How to Play Pikmin 4
Updated · 2 min read
Pikmin 4 puts you in charge of a Rescue Corps explorer on a mysterious planet. Your job is to find crew and castaways, repair the S.S. Shepherd, and gather Sparklium from treasure — with plantlike Pikmin and Rescue Pup Oatchi at your side.
Grow, guide, gather
Nintendo’s store page frames the fantasy in three verbs:
- Grow — Bring pellets and wildlife back to your ship so Pikmin sprout from the ground; pluck them into your squad.
- Guide — Lead them through large areas, battle creatures, and carry resources. Up to three Pikmin types can be with you in the field at once; others wait until you need them.
- Gather — When tasks finish, Pikmin wait in place. Get close and blow your whistle to summon them (also useful for headcounts and pulling them out of danger).
A day on the planet
Each in-game day ends when you must return to the safety of your ship. Nintendo notes that if Pikmin are with you when night falls they are protected, and that alone they are easy prey — so plan exits carefully. Multiple landing spots for your personal ship (the S.S. Beagle) can cut travel time once unlocked.
Between expeditions you use the Rescue Command Post to chat with rescued members, accept side missions, build equipment, and choose Night Expeditions.
Systems newcomers should learn early
- Onions — Matching-color Onions let you grow more of a Pikmin type (Fresh Recruits). New types found in caves come with you if you leave with them.
- Rewind Time — Options → Rewind Time lets you retry a stretch of the day if a plan goes wrong (Nintendo store + Fresh Recruits).
- Radar & treasure — Plus Button radar marks uncollected treasure with ★ in explored areas; the Lab’s Treasure Gauge reacts more strongly as you near treasure or castaways.
- Dandori — Timed Challenges and Battles test efficient planning; Nintendo defines dandori as planning ahead and working efficiently.
