Pikmin 4 Beginner Tips
Updated · 2 min read
These tips paraphrase Nintendo’s Pikmin 4 Guide for Fresh Recruits (August 29, 2023). They are starter habits, not spoiler walkthroughs.
Tips from Nintendo’s Fresh Recruits guide
- Learn controls from Options — Minus (−) Button → Options → Control Guide under Gameplay Guide.
- Know when autosave happens — Day start/end, cave enter/exit, next-level progress; watch for “Saving” top-left.
- Bloom flowers for speed — Nectar or longer underground time before plucking makes Pikmin move and carry faster.
- Set Shortcuts — Register frequent actions/items to the D-Pad or click Left Stick via Shortcut Settings.
- Use Co-Op Mode if you have a buddy — Options → Co-Op Mode; Player 2 throws pebbles/items as Pebble Pitcher.
- Command Oatchi — Hold Y, tilt Left Stick to the Oatchi wedge; “Pick Up a Scent” and treasure/castaway commands can lead you while you ride.
- Hunt sparkly treasure — Plus (+) radar shows ★ for uncollected treasure in explored fog; Lab Treasure Gauge helps close the distance.
- Fight with dandori — Bring many Pikmin, aim for weak points, match types, Rush with X while Pikmin ride Oatchi, whistle out of danger, and upgrade gear/Oatchi at base.
- Collect Onions to grow types — Cave finds join you if you exit with them; matching Onions unlock growing more; Oatchi can sniff that type.
- Farm raw materials — Needed for Builds and Lab gear; dirt mounds refresh daily; Oatchi can sniff materials.
- Trust the squad Hint — On the take-out screen, X auto-builds a suggested squad for the area/cave.
- Swap Auto vs Manual lock — With Auto Target Lock, ZR toggles Manual Target Lock for rear/weak-point aim.
- Pause the clock for planning — Radar (Plus) and Options (Minus) stop time; Survey Drones from the Lab also pause the clock.
- Rewind Time freely — Minus → Rewind Time if a fight or carry went poorly.
Modern difficulty options
A later free update added Relaxed, Normal, and Fierce Creature Activity Levels (changeable in Options). Relaxed: creatures won’t attack unless you attack them. Fierce: higher challenge. See Updates.
